    General tag question

How exactly does a General tag work, if you draw it can you hunt any general unit during its open dates. For Example I live in Western SD so am thinking of trying a general tag some year where I could take a week and hunt a quality area and if not successful be able to hunt unit 116 on weekends.

Yep you're correct. You have to look into the regs to see when each unit is open. Sometimes units have different season dates so be careful of that not to be in a unit that is closed while other ones in the same region are open.

You can hunt in any general unit in a given region.

Are you talking deer? Like sslinger said, you can only hunt the general seasons in the REGION that you draw. For elk, it is any general unit statewide.

You guys need to quit using the term "General" and "Region" at the same time. A Region is the term used for a number of deer units like Region A or Region C. All units for elk are individual and are not in a region. Each unit is independent of the others with a lot of them being LE (limited entry or limited quota, if you will) with about 50 others being classified as a General unit. If you draw a "General" tag you can hunt any of those 50 or so units showing in the Regulations as open for a General tag and those seasons vary unit by unit, so you could have a lot of hunts in a number of areas over a good length of time if you have the time and money to be able to do your thing.

I think he is asking about elk because 116 elk is by SD. You can hunt in any unit that has a general season with a general tag. As others have said check the regs and season dates for the specific unit or units you want to hunt as they can very from unit to unit.

I thought he was asking about deer. I'm glad I'm a resident, don't have to worry about all the region stuff for deer.

ssligerr, I thought deer as well. That non-resident deer region stuff is indeed confusing.
