New Mexico Mule Deer Unit 2B Tag(s) Drawn

So evidently my dad needs to start playing the Texas Lottery. Not only did he draw a LE Utah Elk Tag, but I just got notice that we both drew Mule Deer for October 29th - Nov 2nd. I know there are some monster mulies in this area, but don't know the first place to start looking to hunt. We are going to be DIY'ers. Anybody ever hunted this unit, know what to expect or where to start? From what I understand snow will be the best help we can get for pushing the big boys down from the mountains. Any help or info would be great. Thanks ahead of time.

I've bowhunted it several times....been a few years though. It's always been in January during the post rut activity. Not sure where they'll be that time of year.......I'd focus on the northern most area between the reservoir and the Jicarilla Indian Reservation. LOTS of gas roads in that country......with many gated for authorized personnel only. However, you can hike into areas on the roads themselves to get into some good bitterbrush/sage flats.

bring a 4wd, good mud tires and tire chains. Any kind of precipitation will make the gas roads nearly impassible without. Any other vehicle recovery stuff would be good aswell.

I live in Farmington NM and know the area very well. I'd be glad to get you started in the right direction. I drew the Jan. 2A archery tag this year.

Thanks for the info fellas. Our plan is to leave a couple of days early for dad's elk hunt in Utah and to do some scouting on the way through 2b. Then on the way back stop again and do some more scouting. From the sounds of it, during that time of the year, the mule deer are migrating out of Colorado and down into this lower land in 2b. Is that about right?

NM_Archer, if you could get us headed in the right direction, we both would greatly appreciate it. We aren't looking for the next record book deer, although it would be nice, but we would like a respectable buck for this area. Is it better to camp out up there in the back country or to drive in everyday. I am thinking about asking a friend to borrow his Polaris Ranger, could one get around these parts with a UTV or is it better to go on foot. PM me if you would like. Thanks again for the info.
