Just joined as a guy from MN that's never big game hunted out of state aside from WI. I'm getting older (31) and decided its time to start putting in for points and expanding my endeavors out west. I'm actually primarily a waterfowl hunter and a trapper, but have always been a casual deer hunter taking lots of antlerless deer and a few small bucks with bow, gun and muzzleloader. After chasing whitetails for 15 years and squandering my only opportunities on decent bucks I finally put two down in 2013 and the big game fever was revived. I also used to stand behind a gun counter for about 9 years and accumulated more rifles than I should have, and feel like I need to use them.
I have a couple little boys that still talk about daddy's "big buck deer" from way back in November.
I have been doing research on different states and points here recently and have plans this spring to put in for at least two, probably 3 if not 4 states for mule deer (WY, CO, UT, MT). I can't hunt for a few years except maybe 2015 due to work and figured having more points is always better. This forum has been exceedingly helpful in the last couple of weeks. Sorry in advance for all the questions that I'm going to have about applying and general hunting/drawing strategies.
I'm planning to primarily put in for mule deer points and won't hunt deer until 2017 at the earliest, but may try for a 2015 pronghorn hunt in WY to get my feet wet out west. I working on three of my other very close friends who are also 30-something to join me on all this, one is signed on for the whole deal, another (from AK) is probably up for one state but its a big commitment. I don't see a way around trying to get points now if I want to hunt in my mid-late 30s in some better units.
