Potatoes are all over the state, which is why I'm surprised I haven't heard of anyone trying them.

I remember seeing, bears ploughed ground, where a lot of bears met to dig something. I believe that was in Idaho. If I remember right both griz and black bear were there digging

Sweet potatoes might be a good bait. Especially if liberally basted with beer!

I have never killed or eaten a bear but I think I would rather stay home and eat sweat potatoes and drink beer then give them up for a bear that might not show up. LOL

You never know, some people have no idea that Idaho grows a lot of potatoes.

What??? There's potatoes in Idaho? Bears do like beer to, although they prefer Hams...

I was trying to be sarcastic. It doesn't come across so great typing and sometimes I am not as funny as I think I am, like a Hams I suppose.

Potatoes are pretty high calorie and starchy, I don't know why they wouldn't work. Plus if you let them ferment enough, you could get the bear drunk on potato Vodka and he would be an easier target. I have heard not to mix beer and liquor, so maybe leave the beer out of that mix. In my limited bear baiting experience, the stinkier the bait, the better. When ours was ready we couldn't hardly get near it without puking. It was easy to find in the dark, too. You just followed your nose, the same as the bear was doing. I have heard that the time of year has a lot to do with what bears taste like. Spring bears are eating everything they can find, so they taste bad. Fall bears are looking for protein and fat, so they taste better. Kindof like fish, the fish eating other fish or shrimps and stuff are better to eat than the mudsuckers. I might have that backwards. I don't mind the meat, but my neighbors are too close to have a stinky bear barrel around so I haven't tried in quite a while.
