    Greys River Mule Deer

I am planning on a DIY hunt in the Greys River area this fall. I have 4 preference points so pretty confident I will draw. Would probably stay in Alpine on the north end of area 144 but am open to suggestions. Any info you anyone could provide on the area would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help.

Have hunted area around the head of greys river. Some good deer in that area but you have to get away from the road. There are several camps in the area so be willing to move if you have to.

If you are planning to stay in Alpine you will have a tough hunt, or settle for a small buck. There are relatively few deer near the roads, and even fewer big bucks. The only really effective way to hut this country is either back packing in or riding a horse. Hiking 2-3+ hours each morning and evening inthe dark to get into good country is a certain way to lose weight, but not to kill a deer.

What kind of weather can I expect? If the season is the same as last year I would probably go the last week which would be Oct. 1-6. Which would be the better area west of the Greys River or east? I could camp in the area if it made my chances better. Thanks for the info.

You can expect just about everything by Oct. 1st. We are there every year the first week in August and last year we got hailed on with an inch of pea gravel size hail to show for it at the end. You'd better prepare for the worst if you're going high in Oct. If it's nice for you, you scored. If it's nasty, you'll be miserable but alive.

Yea...last year we received FEET of snow by the first week of october...really screwed over a lot of people and how they planned to hunt that time of year. Be prepared for any and all weather. From deep snow and not going to the high country anymore, to hot and dry. It can easily be one or the other

There are better areas in G than what you are looking at. If you want a local perspective pm me and I'll be glad to offer you some other areas for consideration...if you're interested. Either way good luck!
