I will be staying in Gunnison the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th of July to do some scouting for our planned 2nd rifle elk hunt later this year. Anyone live in the area and want to catch a beer one evening?

Spent 3 days hiking and driving around the unit. Found some great elk country, and some elk, unfortunately its 6.5 miles back in and since I'm going with 2 older gentlemen, not sure I want to kill them. Outstanding views though, great country.
Is there still snow up high?
I only hiked to 10,300 and there was not snow up there. I drove up higher though, snow at the top of red creek and snow at the top of rainbow lake road. Bad enough up Red Creek I turned around, but I made it most of the way. Can get around and stay out of it for the most part though.
that's good. Going to be south of town trying to find 2 specific deer that I hope stay around the 8.5-9K range 2nd season.
Are you talking about unit 67, I am also hunting unit 67 this year during the muzzy season. I have elk tag, but my dad and brother both have deer tags. You should p.m me, we are also going to be hunting deer just south of gunnison, on public near some private, looking for deer from a tip we got from a freind!
We are hunting 54, rented a cabin on the lake and trying to bike to the wilderness edge, then go in from there. May make an overnight trip 7 miles in one day if we have no luck with that strategy.
Good luck hope you get one. Used to hunt around Squache? Up past dome lake there is an old ruby mine they blew shut. There is a wilderness area up there that had some elk a couple miles back in. The little creeks were full of brookies too, great fun with them
