Bitterroot bulls what does Montana consider Max points? Are Elk, Deer the same as Moose, Sheep, and goat in the point system?

Points work the same for all species, you just get your name in the hat another time for each point. So, if you have 2 points, your name goes in the hat 3 times, once for application, and twice for your points.

What I meant by max points was I have been getting points since they were available. That is 9 points, I believe, for those species.

After 33 years I finally drew one of the three, moose, sheep, and goat! I got a goat tag for 240-06 Kootenai Creek near Stevensville. Probably not a lot of goats up there, but at least I get to go hunting for one finally. I'm pretty darn excited. Already called my FWP buddy and the biologist although I have not talked with him yet. My FWP contact was able to look at 2006, the last year he could find information on flights monitoring the goat herds. They flew that drainage and only counted 14 goats with 3 of them being billies. I hope he can find some more recent data for me! :0) The biologist should be able to help out and I'm going to call the last two years applicants to get some more information. It does not matter to me, I finally get to go hunt one!

Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated B. Bulls! How far in do you go before you typically start seeing any? When my buddy told me about the census flights, it kind of surprised me as 14 for that whole drainage is not very many.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the counts. Those 240 units are so small that goats travel from one unit to another just about daily, especially billies.

A few years ago a buddy got a 240 tag (tin cup to boulder), and we saw traveling goats often. My buddy ended up shooting a near-book Billy that was in a neighboring unit when we first saw him.

Goats could be anywhere up and down the canyon, but the head end of the basin would be the best place to start.

Choose a side, get high up, and you should be able to glass a long ways.
