    Steens Unit Antelope Hunt

After putting in for almost 15 years, my friend finally drew his Steen Antelope tag. A group of us went down this past weekend for the opening and ended up having a great time. We were able to located several decent bucks, but were having a hard time getting within shooting range.

After chasing after a big buck the whole second day, we were finally able to located a decent sized buck at a watering hole, and he took the shot at about 350 yards. Ended up being about 12" length. It wasn't the big buck that we were chasing, but we were really stoked with this one.

Thanks guys. It is definitely a nice area, and we all really enjoyed it. We drove down to Frenchglen on the first day as well, but had someone point us to the location that we ran into this buck and a bunch of others. I will say, the Frenchglen area looks like really good muley area as well, especially when you get higher up.

Tell your friend congratulations, nice buck. That Frenchglen area is pretty, lots of snakes there, so I hear. Oregon is awfully proud of their antelope tags, did you see quite a few bucks in the area?

I was just out not too far from there last year with my buddy, John, that lives in Sheridan, WY. He drew a OIL Cali Sheep tag in the Beatys unit in OR not far from where you guys were. We stayed right on the border in Denio and he shot his sheep about two or three miles over on the OR side of the mountains and not too far south of the highway that runs through Denio. There was a lot of irrigated land back behind our trailer camp and I have never seen mosquitoes like they raise out there. The screens were literally so covered with them that it almost blocked the view when looking out! He's going back out there over the Labor Day holiday to try and fill an antelope tag he drew for the three units up there in that part of NV. I'm staying home and getting ready to head for Wyoming the week after that and he can swat all those mosquitoes by himself this time, LOL!

We found that overall they seemed to be in pockets. In two days, I think we saw about 8 different bucks, and 7 of them were in the same 5 mile square area. This was in an area between the Narrows and Diamond.

Topgun: I know in some areas the mosquitos can be pretty unbearable. Luckily, where we were at was extremely dry and we didn't have to worry about that. Hope your friend has some luck out there, I think there are quite a few big bucks still running around. We didn't see anyone kill anything too massive.
