Backcountry Bowhunting Quotes and Q and A
Apr 03 2006
Cameron Hanes has hit a home run with his new book, Backcountry Bowhunting.
Cameron redefines the term “hardcore” with amazing advice on how to bowhunt rugged country where giant animals hang out. I know hardcore…and this is it. A must read for every serious archer!” - Chuck Adams, America’s Best Known Bowhunter
“I think Cameron’s book Backcountry Bowhunting is really THE guide for the next generation of hardcore bowhunters out West.”
Mike Eastman, Founder
Eastmans’ Hunting Journal & TV producer
“Bowhunters today want to be inspired, and they want information on how to reach their goals of backpacking the wilderness, taking big mule deer, bugling in bull elk, living the rugged life. Cameron’s Backcountry Bowhunting will resonate with a lot of modern bowhunters.”
Dwight Schuh, Editor
Bowhunter Magazine & TV
“One must have spent a great deal of time in the backcountry to truly appreciate this book. I have and I do. What Cameron writes is from the heart. If you want to hunt the backcountry with a bow, you need this book.”
Randy Ulmer, Bowhunting Legend
Bowhunter Hall of Fame
” Guy, I watched the colorado trophy elk hunt, Sunday 12 Mar. It appeared
that just before the shot was taken, you chambered a round with a LEFT hand
rifle. But then the shot was taken with a RIGHT hand rifle. Am I seeing
things? Please check your footage and let me know. Thanks. Art”
Dear Art,
Thank you for watching the program. I just wanted to let you know that you
are not seeing things. The editors digitally inverted that particular piece
of footage so that I would be shooting into the middle of the screen instead
of off the edge of your TV into oblivion. I do in fact shoot right handed.
Sorry for the confusion and let me know if you have any further questions or
comments.

“I have two questions for you:
First, I was wondering whether you think my 7mm-08 is too small for elk?
Second, do you think my reflex bow will be good for Mule Deer this year using carbon arrows?
Thank you very much
Jon Beck”
Dear Jon,
Thank you for taking the time to write. We at Eastmans’ always enjoy hearing from our readers and I would like to help you in any way possible.
Now to answer your questions; first off, the 7mm-08 is plenty of gun/caliber to take down an elk. This past fall I filmed our editor, Shon Simpson knocking down a 346-inch trophy bull on public land right here in Wyoming using a .280 Remington. The best advice I can give you is to use at least a 160 grain bullet and try to keep your shot distance to within 300 yards.
Range and shot placement are key with any firearm and the 7mm-08 is no different.
To answer your second question: I think your new Reflex bow will certainly be more than adequate shooting carbon arrows for mule deer this fall. The developments in carbon arrow technology over the past few years have been tremendous. It is important that you shoot the correct shaft for your bow’s particular draw length and draw weight and the weight of the broadhead you will be shooting. If you shoot an arrow that does not have enough spine (that is not stiff enough) you will run into trouble getting your bow to tune correctly. The guys at your local pro shop should be able to help you select the correct arrow shaft for your Reflex bow.
I hope this answers your questions and I wish you all the best in your endeavors this fall after those bucks and bulls. Good luck and good hunting.
