Camping
Jul 09 2008As if I don’t get enough camping in during the fall, I decided to head to the hills this weekend to do a little scouting and avoid the almost 100 degree heat that hammered our area on Friday. Rinda and I decided to load up and do a little old fashioned camping in an old burn up above Mike’s cabin in the Beartooth Mountains. The weather was much cooler and the wildlife was abundant. Our slumber was interrupted at 3:15 by coyotes yelping and to my surprise the elk began bugling at about 4:30. No visits from Mike’s bears though. A pretty cushy camp by fall standards, but it was good to get out of the summer heat and get into the hills. We are extremely fortunate to live so close to such magnificent country…particularly, with $5.00 per gallon gasoline. No doubt, fall is right around the corner with our first hunt, the antelope archery opener starting on the 15th of August.

Looks like a good place to be! We’ve been getting out in the Idaho mountains around our place to do a little scouting - it is something we should never take for granted to live so close to such awesome country. I’m glad you all have not grown callous towards the majesty of the Western lands!

Hey Guy I’m sure you get this alot since you live in Wyoming. I live just north of Ft. Worth Tx. Me and 5 other close friends put in for a Antelope group draw and got it in Unit 16 “Buffalo”. This is our first hunt together outside of Texas. I feel a little bit uneasy about the whole hunt not being able to find any info on the Unit. Have you hunted this Unit? If so where in the Unit would be a good place to concentrate on animals? Do you know where would be a good place for a spike camp. We will be driving up on Oct. 4th and will hunt for 5 days. Any hunt info “inside info” ha ha ha for this area would be great. I haven’t been able to find any info on this unit on the web so anything you could provide is appriciated. Love the show and the Mags keep up the great work.

you know, i think it takes guys from the west-to appreciate and marvel at what you guys do. it isn’t anywthere near the market size of the whitetail hunter, but what your crew does is real, beautiful and compelling.
you guys do it right and continue to inspire me to backcountry bowhunt.
good livin’

I’m think of a way to go scouting- oops I mean camping with the family off the Pacific Crest Trail. I’m not sure my 2,3, & 8 yr. old & wife are ready for 10,000 ft. … YET!

Hey Mike, love the show! I am a avid mule deer hunter from Bismarck, ND. Just curious, have you or anyone from the show ever done a hunt in the North Dakota Badlands? It is very beautiful and rugged counrty that produces monster bucks. I would love to see it. Good luck this fall.
