Tue, Jul 21 2009The brilliant autumn colors are falling to earth in exchange for snow-capped peaks and frozen, inactive elk wallows. The mornings and evenings are eerily silent when compared to the Rocky Mountain ruckus that disrupted the peace here a mere three weeks earlier. The smell of autumn is all but a distant memory, easily covered up by the slight scent of campfire smoke riding the midmorning thermal up and out of the frosted valley below. The elk hunting is tough; damn tough. Your horse is sore, your knees are swollen, and your gun barrel is ice cold for yet another morning - the seventh in a row.
