Six hunters were on the hillside looking at a big bull the night before the season opened, making an already challenging hunt even more so. Highly competitive hunting situations are like Easter egg hunts for kids at a public park; everyone is after the same prize and there is nothing left shortly after the start. Get it or it will be gone! The elk usually hightail it out of these situations, unscathed with fresh hunter’s scent in their noses by sunrise of opening morning.
Opening morning started off with crystal clear skies and nice cool temperatures. We had crossed a creek down from camp to head up to our favorite place to start calling. On the way there we all paused as we heard the distinct whistle of a bugle.
