The story of my hunt started over two years ago when I first learned of Idaho’s Disabled Veterans Special Big Game Tag Program on Eastmans’ Hunting Forums. The program makes five tags, free of charge, available each year to disabled veterans for any deer, elk, pronghorn, moose, black bear or mountain lion hunt. Tags must be requested, not from the applicant, but from a sponsoring nonprofit organization that has a mission to afford opportunities, experiences and assistance to disabled veterans. I made a quick call to Sharon Kiefer, Deputy Director of Idaho Fish and Game, who was the point of contact for the program. She was extremely courteous and helpful and quickly explained to me how the program works and what a sponsoring organization must submit with the application. The next step in the process required me to find a qualifying nonprofit organization that would be willing to sponsor me. My local hometown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1665 immediately popped into my mind.
