Oh boy, this topic has raged in hunting circles for as long as I can remember, and probably since the dawn of the first metallic cartridge some 170 years ago. In the United States the first .30 caliber (.308 bullet diameter) metallic rifle was introduced in 1892 (the Springfield 1892 bolt-action rifle) and with it the love affair with the .30 cal. in the United States began. In that same year, across the pond, the 7x57 Mauser (.284 bullet diameter) was introduced and with it a similar love affair with the 7MM in Europe. So as you can see, the stage is set for an ageless debate.
