I am convinced there is nothing more thrilling than hunting a big old rutted-up bull bugling his head off. The excitement of hearing the raspy growl of a bugle down in a canyon and moving in is as good as it gets! This is also our biggest advantage as archery elk hunters. These big mature bulls let their guard down for the breeding season and focus on the cows. They are vulnerable as they call furiously to order around the herd and chase away intruders. This is magic in the elk woods for us bowhunters, and we have a huge advantage this time of year both locating and hunting bulls by their bugles. But using your ears to guide you through the mountains is a skill that has to be honed.
