This story began on a 2013 scouting hike when I noticed a small-bodied buck with massive antlers. I scouted the area the next two years, and in the summer of 2016 I captured pictures of him. My heart raced as I realized this was a buck way bigger than any Coues’ I had ever seen. I struggled to bite my tongue and hold my excitement in about this well-hidden giant. Soon I found myself in the area every chance I could looking for tracks, trails, sheds, and the buck himself. I even decided to go by horseback to glass early mornings, ensuring I wasn’t spooking the deer. Unfortunately, before this short scouting trip was over I had a minor accident where my horse wound up falling on my little saddle rifle. I pulled it from the scabbard only to find the dovetail sight twisted off to one side, and the short rifle now had a distinguished curve to it.
