As you have read over the last years, Montana’s mule deer populations had been hurting since the harsh winter of 2011. I am happy to report that population counts are now back to the levels seen prior to the 2011 winterkill. The recovery has been such that FWP has reopened antlerless hunts in many areas. One thing to keep track of is how the rest of the 2016-2017 winter plays out. So far, it has been on the harsher side and a higher than average winterkill is possible.
