Issue 165 - MRS: New Mexico

Updated: Apr 2, 2018

The Land of Enchantment received much needed moisture last winter, spring and summer which was a great benefit for our wildlife. The elk continue to be at their maximum carrying capacity in most areas and the desert bighorn sheep and Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep continue to thrive and expand. The mule deer herds are slowly expanding and there was an increase in buck harvest and hunter satisfaction in most areas. The pronghorn antelope numbers are strong across the state and the fawn recruitment has improved thanks to the moisture and improved habitat conditions. The exotics are stable with planned hunts to lower the Ibex population numbers to avoid overpopulation. That’s the good news.
